History of Meteorology

The name can be confusing because it sounds like the study of meteors. Its origin explains why:

  • Greek Root: It comes from the ancient Greek word meteĊron, which means "thing high up" or "phenomenon in the sky".
  • Historical Shift: In 340 BC, Aristotle wrote a treatise called Meteorologica covering everything from weather to space rocks. Over time, astronomy claimed the study of space rocks, while meteorology focused strictly on the atmosphere.

  • Troposphere Concentration: Most meteorology focuses on the lowest layer of the atmosphere, where human activity and nearly all weather events occur.
  • Weather vs. Climate: Meteorology looks at short-term variations (hours to weeks). In contrast, climatology focuses on long-term data trends over decades or centuries.
  • Modern Tools: Scientists rely heavily on advanced tech, including Doppler radar, weather satellites, and supercomputer modeling to analyze atmospheric patterns.
